McKendree College Claims AMC Post-Season Title in Baseball

Kirksville, Mo. – The McKendree College Bearcats defeated the Missouri Baptist College Spartans by a score of 15-12 to take home the American Midwest Conference (AMC) post-season tournament championship last Friday. McKendree, the #1 seed in the tournament, was also the league’s regular-season champion, posting an 18-2 record versus conference opponents. The tournament title guarantees McKendree a berth into regional playoffs, which is set to begin next weekend.

In a vote by league coaches, Brett Haake, an outfielder for the Bearcats, has been chosen the 2000 AMC Player of the Year. The senior from Belleville, Ill. recorded a batting average of .374, racking up 70 hits in 187 at-bats during the regular-season. Haake swatted 13 doubles, four triples and 13 home runs. He led the league in runs batted in with 84 and recorded a fielding averaged of .946, committing only 5 errors in 57 games played.

John Frech, also a member of the McKendree College squad, has been named the 2000 AMC Pitcher of the Year. Frech took the mound for the Bearcats 11 times during the regular-season, pitching 76 innings and recording nine wins. A native of Sparta, Ill., Frech faced 299 batters during the regular-season, striking out 66 and walking only 17. He posted an earned run average of 2.13, allowing only 18 earned runs.

The AMC Newcomer of the Year honor is presented to the top transfer student-athlete in the AMC. T.J. Guadagnano, a catcher for the Park University Pirates, is the 2000 recipient of this award. During the regular-season, Guadagnano, who is from Blue Springs, Mo., logged a batting average of .460, knocking 80 hits in 174 at-bats. He totaled 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 46 runs batted in. Behind the plate, Guadagnano committed only 10 errors in 48 games and recorded 247 put-outs.

Adam Hook, a member of the McKendree College pitching staff, is the 2000 AMC Freshman of the Year. Hook, who hails from Vienna, Ill., appeared on the mound 14 times for the Bearcats in the regular-season, pitching in 20 innings and compiling four wins and four saves. He recorded an earned run average of 3.15 and totaled 21 strikeouts.

The 2000 AMC Coach of the Year for men's baseball is Jim Boehne from McKendree College. Boehne led the Bearcats to a 2000 regular-season record of 44 wins and six losses. Under Boehne’s direction, McKendree claimed its first AMC championships, regular-season or post-season, in school history.
