McKendree College Claims League Postseason Tournament Title

Lebanon, Ill.The McKendree College men's basketball team seized an automatic berth to the NAIA Division I National Tournament tonight, knocking off Columbia College in the championship game of the American Midwest Conference postseason tournament by a final score of 66-56. With the win, the secure an automatic berth into the NAIA Men’s Division I National Tournament scheduled for March 13-19 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.                        

In a vote by league coaches, Darrell Flake, a 6-4 senior forward for McKendree, is the 2001-02 AMC Most Valuable Player. Flake led the Bearcats to a regular season conference title, scoring a conference-high 23.8 points per outing. In addition, he shot 70 percent from the field, dropping in 308 of his 442 field goal attempts. Flake, a native of Chicago, Ill., also averaged 8.7 rebounds per outing, corralling 271 during the regular season.

The AMC Freshman of the Year is Chad Storck from McKendree College. Storck, who hails from Farina, Ill., averaged 6.6 points during his rookie campaign, starting at the point guard for the Bearcats. He led the team in free throw percentage, netting 85 percent of his attempts. In addition, the 6-0 guard’s turnover to assist ratio was nearly 2 to 1. Storck passed out 3.4 assists per game, while committing only 1.6 turnovers.

The AMC Newcomer of the Year honor is presented to the top transfer student-athlete in the AMC. Miquel Coleman, a sophomore for the Columbia College Cougars is the 2001-02 recipient of this award. Coleman, a 6-4 forward from Louisville, Ken., led the Cougars in scoring this season, averaging 13.1 points a game and shooting 52 percent from the field. In addition, Coleman pulled down 5.4 rebounds each game for Columbia.

The 2001-02 AMC Coach of the Year for men's basketball is Harry Statham. Statham is in his 36th year at the helm of the Bearcat program. His overall record stands at 812-319. This season, he led McKendree to a 9-1 mark in league play and a regular-season conference title. Statham is the winningest active coach in the NAIA and needs just six victories to become the organization’s all-time leader.

A complete list of the 10-member AMC All-Conference team, the honorable mention squad and the academic all-conference team, is included on the below. Members of the academic all-conference team have earned at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
