2001 Women's Soccer All-Conference Team

William Woods Claims Women’s Soccer Postseason Title;
All-Conference Squad Announced

Lebanon, Ill. – In American Midwest Conference postseason tournament action today in Lebanon, Ill., the second seeded William Woods University Owls upset the top-seeded Bearcats from McKendree College by a score of 1-0 to claim the 2001 AMC Postseason Tournament crown in women’s soccer.  The victory assures the Owls a spot in the NAIA Region V Tournament, which is scheduled to begin next week.

In a vote by league coaches, Erin Jewell, a senior forward for the William Woods University Owls, has been named the 2001 American Midwest Conference Most Valuable Player in women’s soccer. The Kelso, Wash. native, who appeared in 17 matches, totaled 18 goals and 10 assists during the regular season, leading the Owls to a second place finish in the league.

Fabiana Mendoza, a midfielder for Missouri Baptist College, is the 2001 AMC Freshman of the Year. In her first collegiate season, Mendoza netted 11 goals and pitched in 18 assists. She is a native of Montevideo, Uruguay.

Jaime Dienell, a junior midfielder for the McKendree Bearcats, is the 2001 recipient of the AMC Newcomer of the Year award. The Newcomer of the Year honor is handed out the top transfer-student in the AMC, as voted on by league coaches. Dienell, a junior who hails from St. Louis, Mo.,  totaled eight goals and eight assists for McKendree during the regular season.

For the second consecutive season, the AMC Coach of the Year is Tim Strange from McKendree College. In the 2001 season, Strange led the Bearcats to a 3-0-1 record in league play and a first place finish in the AMC regular season.

The Fair Play Award is annually presented to one AMC women’s soccer squad based on two areas of sportsmanship. First, teams are awarded points based on their total number of red and yellow cards accumulated throughout the regular season. Second, AMC coaches vote on the squads, ranking their level of sportsmanship during their respective contests. The 2001 recipient of the Fair Play Award is Harris-Stowe State College.

A complete list of the 14-member AMC All-Conference team, the Honorable Mention squad and the Academic All-Conference team, are listed on the following pages. Members of the Academic All-Conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
