2001 Softball All-Conference Team


McKendree College Knocks off William Woods University in 
AMC Tournament Championship

Columbia, Mo. - The McKendree College Bearcats earned the 2001 American Midwest Conference (AMC) Postseason Softball Tournament title today, defeating the William Woods University Owls by a score of 4-2 in the championship game of the double elimination tournament.  As the top finisher in the regular season and the postseason, McKendree automatically advances to the NAIA Region V Tournament, which is scheduled for May 7-8 in Springfield, Mo. As the second place finisher in AMC regular season play, the Columbia College Cougars will receive the AMC’s second automatic bid to the tournament.

In a vote by league coaches, Jessica Hruby, a catcher and designated player for the William Woods University Owls, has been chosen as the 2001 American Midwest Conference (AMC) Player of the Year. The sophomore from Oxford, Iowa recorded a .414 batting average during the regular season, racking up 53 hits in 128 at-bats. In WWU’s 45 regular season contests, Hruby tallied 13 doubles, six triples, and a league-high 42 RBIs. In addition, she totaled only 11 strikeouts and committed just two fielding errors during the regular season.

Mindy Jameson, a senior left-handed hurler for the McKendree College Bearcats, is the 2001 AMC Pitcher of the Year. The McClure, Ill. native faced 298 batters in 80.2 innings on the mound for McKendree, notching 104 strikeouts and just 12 walks. She recorded a 1.21 ERA for the regular season and posted a record of six wins, six losses and two saves for the Bearcats.

Kandace Goforth, a shortstop for the Williams Baptist College Eagles, is the AMC Freshman of the Year. Goforth, who hails from Batesville, Ark, recorded a .359 batting average in her rookie campaign with the Eagles. She totaled 28 hits in 78 appearances at the plate, including seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and nine RBIs. In addition, she stole 18 bases and committed just six fielding errors during the regular season.

The AMC Newcomer of the Year honor is presented to the top transfer student-athlete in the AMC. Amy Books, a junior third baseman for William Woods University, is the 2001 recipient of this award. Books played in all 44 games for the Owls during the regular season, totaling a .331 batting average with 45 hits in 136 at bats. In addition, she notched four doubles, one triple, one home run and 18 RBIs, while striking out just nine times.

The 2001 AMC Coach of the Year for women's softball is Evelyn Bean from McKendree College. Bean is in her fourth season as head coach at McKendree, where she has amassed a record of  123 wins and  81 losses. This season, she led the Bearcats to the AMC regular season title, totaling an overall regular season record of 27-18 and a conference record of 8-2.

A complete list of the 18-member AMC All-Conference team, the Honorable Mention squad and the Academic All-Conference team, is included below. Members of the Academic All-Conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
